Have you ever been on a fair ride in the middle of the summer? You wait all year to go on your favorite ride, and right as you are strapping yourself in you begin to panic. Your hands feel dumb, your heart is racing, and you start to bite your lips with both fear and excitement. Then, you remember a story you read from years past about the ride. You begin to get even more panicked, thinking of any possible way you can get off the ride as it is about to begin. You begin to search through your brain for any natural anxiety relief you can come up with. You sit still, and realize there is no turning back. You count 1, 2, 3, in your head. You close your eyes until the ride is over, or until your fear surpasses.
Although anxiety can be a very unpleasant at times, it can also be a defensive mechanism. The reaction in your body from anxiety is your brain’s response to the situation. You may be in grave danger but the likelihood of something happening is slim. You may be overreacting. People have the ability to calm themselves in periods of panic. Most people don’t need Anti anxiety medications and can work through their issues themselves. Your thinking process can be helped through a guide or therapist. With help from them, it is easier to talk yourself through mentally challenging situations. If you can calm your brain down, you can calm the reactions it is sending to the rest of your body. You may need to think about something in your head that removes you from the stress of the situation you’re in. You can take deep breaths and talk yourself through. Not every situation you will be able to get off the ride for.
There are definitely a variety of exercises that can be used to help you overcome stressful situations. Like what was said, if you can’t get off the ride, you have to live through it. The coping mechanisms can sometimes be necessary in calming down your body and physical symptoms of stress. Sometimes the best anxiety medication is you. Exposure treatment can also be helpful for those with unmanageable anxiety. If you are scared of driving and you drive a bit each day, you eventually will become desensitized to anxiety (the fear of the unknown), and will be able to travel any place in your car in which you want to go. It’s easy to overcome anxiety once you put your mind to it.
