Stress Relief: Is Using Drugs Really the Best Way to Go?

The brain and body are chemically-driven systems that manifest stress. Various de-stress medications can help with the achievement of stress relief and perhaps even prevent its recurrence. The rarer side-effects are dizziness, digestive tract issues, dry eyes, impotence, wheezing and skin rashes.

High medication doses can lead to slurred speech, poor judgment, weak reflexes and impaired walking ability. Overdosing on such meds is possible, which can prove fatal.
•    Antidepressants – An antidepressant treats major depression and conditions related to it. However, it also possesses anti-anxiety characteristics, and can often be used for treating stress signs and symptoms. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) are a group of antidepressants that includes Lexapro, Paxil and Prozac. SSRIs are non-addictive, but adverse side-effects are tied to their usage, specifically dry mouth, nausea, sleep disturbances, dizziness, plus a variety of sexual climax and arousal issues.
•    Nutritional supplements – Examples of these are Valerian, Kava, 5-HTP, and Passionflower. There are also the herbs chamomile, oats, skullcap, hops and motherwort. They all come in handy for stress management and anxiety treatment. While many of these are naturally occurring, it does not necessarily mean they are completely harmless. Certain doses and combinations can even aggravate a medical condition, interfering with the efficacy of prescribed drugs.

Aside from successful stress management using the above medications, people can also reduce stress with the help of some psychological strategies.
