People with social anxiety disorder can learn to recognize and alter their thoughts, which will in turn change the way they act and the way they feel. After undergoing CBT, patients can learn to have a different response to anxiety provoking situations.

In most cases, patients who undergo CBT have better results and are less likely to have a relapse of their social anxiety disorder than those who take medication for their condition. People who only get medication for their social anxiety disorder (social phobia) often relapse quickly once they are off the medication.
